Meanwhile, it\u2019s not uncommon to see your competitors spamming Google Maps by creating multiple listings for one business. So why do duplicates seem to help some businesses and hurt others? In this guide, we\u2019ll help you determine when you should remove a duplicate and when you should merge, and show you how! Why is it Harmful?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A duplicate GMB listing is an additional listing for a business or place that already has a listing. These listings can cause problems for business owners and users alike. Duplicate listings can divide ranking power and review counts, outrank or hide the owned listing, and cause confusion and distrust for search engines and searchers alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where do Duplicate Listings Come From?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are few possible sources for duplicate listings:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Added by a user (Likely unclaimed. Difficulty to remove: Easy)<br \/>\n<\/b>Google Maps users can add missing places, including businesses they don\u2019t own and aren\u2019t affiliated with. When a new place is added manually by a user, Google should surface any existing listings that share the same name or address, but if it doesn&#8217;t make the connection, or if the user creates a new listing anyways, a duplicate is born.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><b>Forgotten listing or previously verified by the business (Likely claimed. Difficulty to remove: Medium) <\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible a business lost or forgot how to access their listing, or that a past marketer never gave them access to their listing and the business later created a new listing rather than trying to claim the old listing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Automated with information scraped from other online sources (Likely unclaimed. Difficulty to remove: Easy)<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some GMB listings are created automatically as Google detects unintended variations in business information in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/local-search-ecosystem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sources that provide business information to Google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Spam created by a business against Google My Business guidelines (Likely Claimed. Lucky for us <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/blog\/gmb-spam-fighting-101-get-the-basics-down-then-take-out-the-trash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spam-fighters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we can use that to our advantage. To find duplicate listings, search for the business name on Google Search and see if multiple listings populate. If so, look in Maps to see where these listings are located and determine if they are duplicates. In order to stay under Google\u2019s eye, duplicate listings will add keywords or mix up their business name to not be detected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out the businesses registered name by looking for signage in street view, visiting their website and assessing their logo, or searching for them in a local directory or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1MoKwjRZ_Aiccalc_JvtP_oaWTxtfTbhPq2ZpDbvKR3k\/edit#gid=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secretary of State business entity search<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (U.S. only).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-62595 \" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Duplicate-Example-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"990\" height=\"990\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Address<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have found that businesses will frequently hide under the radar from Google\u2019s spam detection by forgoing adding a suite number that they have on their other listing, moving their map pin, or simply creating a second listing as a Service Area Business. Make sure to look into these inconsistencies:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do the suspected duplicate listings have the same phone number?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are they located in the same building?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In map view, is the business in the parking lot or down the street? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If so, these are red flags that the business is using duplicate listings to rank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62578 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Address-Example.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Phone Number<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, we can use phone numbers to search for duplicate listings. We have found that businesses will use different phone numbers, whether it\u2019s a call tracking number, a mobile number, or a different number all together to be filtered out as a duplicate listing. Again, see if the other listings have similarities in their name, address and website. In addition, you can visit their website or other directory pages (YELP or BBB, for example) and see if the number is consistent on those pages. Often, only one main number will be associated with the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62579 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Phone-Example.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"691\" height=\"52\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Handle Duplicate GMB Listings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know how to find a duplicate listing let\u2019s jump into action to get duplicate listings under control. Before we look into merging the listings, let\u2019s look at how you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/4669139?hl=en-GB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clean up duplicates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your listing and what you can do about a competitor\u2019s spammy duplicate listings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handling Duplicates of <\/span><b>Your<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Listing<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><b>1. Get ownership of the listing<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When finding a duplicate of your business, we have found that a business owner may already own the duplicate listing under a different email or a different owner. In the case of practitioners or practices, a previous owner may have created the listing without the current owner\u2019s knowledge. Additionally, Google\u2019s AI may even create a duplicate listing. Regardless, when you find a duplicate of your listing we suggest you request ownership of the listing and follow the steps to get the listings merged or removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Get-Ownership-of-Your-Listing.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2. Report as Duplicate via Maps Suggest an Edit<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our experience, using the Google Maps \u201cSuggest an Edit\u201d feature to report a duplicate is effective if the listing is <\/span><b>not claimed and has consistent NAP with the other listing<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the NAP isn&#8217;t consistent between the two listings, attempt to edit the information with &#8220;Suggest an Edit&#8221;. Once the edit is approved, use &#8220;Suggest an Edit&#8221; again to report the duplicate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ll receive an automated email from Google when your edit is approved. The duplicate below was reported via &#8220;Suggest an Edit&#8221; and the edit was published:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62581 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Suggest-An-Edit.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"958\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>3. Report as Duplicate via the Redressal Complaint Form\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the business has multiple duplicate listings you should head to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/contact\/business_redressal_form\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redressal Complaint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form. Here you can identify the business, each duplicate listing, and <\/span><b>give detailed evidence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directly to Google Support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62582 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Redressal-Form.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handling Duplicates of <\/span><b>a Competitor\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Listing\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><b>When the duplicates have different categories <\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have found that spammy competitors will make duplicate listings to manipulate rankings in different primary categories. This gives them the ability to rank for keywords related to both categories and therefore increases their visibility. This is against Google\u2019s guidelines and gives the competitor an unfair advantage. In these cases, we suggest:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compile evidence that the multiple listings are ineligible duplicates for one business<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Google Maps, Suggest an Edit and select the reason \u201cDuplicate of another place\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/contact\/business_redressal_form\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redressal Complaint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>When duplicates each have reviews<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duplicate listings will often have 1 or 2 reviews with little to no content to manipulate users and Google into thinking it is legitimate. It&#8217;s harder to remove a duplicate listing that has reviews because they add legitimacy to the business. If you find a competitor with duplicate spammy listings with reviews, you can send a Redressal Complaint form or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/contact\/business_chat?cfnti=escalationflow.chat&amp;cft=1&amp;visit_id=637097966824583382-1509116904&amp;rd=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contacting Google Support<\/span><\/a> <b>with evidence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the duplicate listings as using the &#8220;Suggest an Edit&#8221; feature on Google Maps will likely lead to your edit getting denied. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we recommend looking at the duplicate listings carefully (their ranking, categories, names and reviews) as reporting the duplicate could result in Google merging the listings, which would increase the business&#8217;s\u00a0review count and star-rating, which could affect its ranking and yours &#8211; for better or worse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>When duplicates don&#8217;t have unique information or harming your ranking<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible that your competitor\u2019s business has duplicate listings that weren\u2019t created to game rankings. In this case, we don\u2019t recommend reporting the duplicates as they\u2019re likely not helping your competitor\u2019s ranking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merging GMB Listings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help you navigate the best practices for reporting and merging duplicates, we\u2019ve put our process into a simple flowchart. But first, let&#8217;s review when it&#8217;s worth merging duplicates, how to tell if a listing is claimed, and Google&#8217;s (complicated) process for getting access to a listing claimed by someone else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When should I merge duplicate listings?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A duplicate listing is worth merging if there are assets that would be valuable to have added to your original listing, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Positive reviews<br \/>\n<\/strong>Having your reviews divided between your claimed listing and a duplicate doesn&#8217;t help build your review count, star rating or review frequency. When requesting a merge, specify to Support that you want the reviews on the duplicate ported over to the claimed listing.\u00a0<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>History<\/strong><br \/>\nTo determine if a duplicate listing is older than the claimed listing, and therefore has valuable history, examine the listing for user-generated content that pre-dates the claimed listing. Are there reviews, photo uploads or questions on the listing that are older? If the listing is claimed, is the email address for an old business email account or an old marketing company? You can use this information to estimate if the listing is older than your claimed listing.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Higher ranking<\/strong><br \/>\nPerform a Google search for your keywords, top services and business categories or monitor your rankings with a tool like Whitespark&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/local-rank-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rank Tracker<\/a> and examine Google Maps, Local Finder and Local Pack screenshots to see if a duplicate is outranking your claimed listing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How can I tell if a listing is claimed?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at the listing on Google Maps. In the information section where the address and phone number are, near the bottom, you\u2019ll either see \u2018Claim this business\u2019 or \u2018Manage this business or neither.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62585 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Claimed-Listing.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it says \u2018Claim\u2019, the listing is <\/span><b>not claimed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it says, \u2018Manage\u2019 or has neither, it is <\/span><b>claimed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you\u2019ll have to go through a verification process to gain access.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How do I request access to a claimed listing?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process is different for physical locations and service area businesses. Let\u2019s take a look at both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62586 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Pirates.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical Locations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by trying to claim the listing. A message should appear saying the listing has already been claimed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <b>Request Access<\/b> and complete the form, then click <b>Submit<\/b>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62587 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Request-Access.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"671\" \/><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll receive an email from Google. Save this email in case the current owner denies your request.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Tip: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current owner is given 3 days to approve, deny or ignore your request. Contacting Google Support before the 3 days will not speed up this process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the current owner gives you access within the 3 days, you\u2019ll get ownership. If they deny access (or ignore your request), you\u2019ll have to appeal for ownership.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to the email you saved and click <\/span><b>View Request<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019ll see an option to <\/span><b>Appeal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(if the request was denied) or to <\/span><b>Verify <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(if there was no response). Both start the process of re-verification by postcard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you get your postcard and enter the PIN, the listing will now be under your ownership. Check the <\/span><b>Users<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> list to make sure there are now owners or managers that should be removed.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process is a foolproof way of returning ownership to the correct party, but unfortunately it only works for physical locations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service Area Businesses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process to get access to a claimed listing is a bit different for SABs. You\u2019ll have to go through the process of essentially creating a new listing. And it feels like you\u2019re actually <i>making<\/i> a duplicate, but this is Google\u2019s process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-62589 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Michael-Scott.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/business.google.com\/add\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business.google.com\/add<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enter all your business information, then click <\/span><b>Continue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Follow the process to verify the listing. You\u2019ll receive a postcard to the address you entered while filling in your business information. Verification postcards typically arrive in 10 business days.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the listing is verified, an \u2018Owner Conflict\u2019 dialog should appear, indicating the listing is a duplicate. Click <\/span><b>Request Access<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll receive an email from Google. Save this email in case the current owner denies your request.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Tip: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current owner is given 3 days to approve, deny or ignore your request. Contacting Google Support before the 3 days will not speed up this process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the current owner gives you access within the 3 days, you\u2019ll get ownership. If they deny access (or ignore your request), you\u2019ll have to appeal for ownership by contacting Google My Business Support. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can make a solid case and provide proof for why you should become the owner of this listing, Google support can help make the listing unverified.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Whitesparks-Guide-to-Removing-Duplicates.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop Seeing Double<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The complex processes and nuances can be confusing when dealing with duplicate GMB listings, but this doesn\u2019t mean you should avoid dealing with them.
