Users can once again manually add and delete products.\u00a0Barry Schwartz\u00a0reported for Search Engine Roundtable that he spoke with a source at Google who said this update was simply\u00a0<a class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-business-profiles-products-merchant-center-33513.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-business-profiles-products-merchant-center-33513.html\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">\u201c&#8230; a bug that lasted a few hours or so and they have no intention to force people to manage their products in the Google Merchant Center.\u201d<\/a> Google\u2019s Global Communications &amp; Public Affairs team reached out to Whitespark and we will update this post with further information when they respond.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it the end of Google Products as we know it? Businesses can no longer edit existing Products on their Google Business Profiles (GBP) and can only add new Products through Merchant Center. Google Products is now automatically linked to Merchant Center in the GBP Manager. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of May 31, 2022, there is a notice in the dashboard that says Products that were manually added are now \u201cunpublished\u201d and \u201cno longer visible to the public.\u201d But don&#8217;t panic yet! Manually added Products are currently visible on Google Maps and Search (on desktop, mobile and in the Maps app).<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Google-Products-Products-are-no-longer-visible.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you click <strong>View products<\/strong>, a red banner appears at the top of the page saying, \u201cProducts can\u2019t be edited. You can only delete products.\u201d If you try to edit a Product, all of the information fields are locked and you can only delete the Product.<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/red-banner-cant-edit.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the majority of profiles we manage have been updated, some profiles still show Products and allow users to add and edit Products manually. It\u2019s not yet clear why some profiles have been excluded from the update.<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Google-Products-Unlinked-to-Merchant-Center-May-31-2022.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For businesses that have not created <a href=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/google-business-profile-guide\/products-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Products<\/a>, the \u201cGet started\u201d page is the same:<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Google-Products-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Google Merchant Center? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/retail\/solutions\/merchant-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merchant Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lets you manage how your in-store and online product inventory appears on Google. It is designed specifically for retail businesses with online stores. It is free to use and once integrated, customers can buy products from a business\u2019s website, directly on Google, or in-store. Google Business Profiles can connect Products via Merchant Center with Shopify, Woo Commerce, Big Commerce and PrestaShop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does this impact your business?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a retail business using a supported e-commerce platform, take advantage of the opportunity to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/11064260?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">give your Products greater visibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Google Search by connecting your online store and your Google Business Profile through Merchant Center. It appears that Google is automatically detecting a business\u2019s e-commerce platform through the website URL.\u00a0<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/connect-to-shopify-promo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/connect-to-woocommerce.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an online store but your e-commerce platform is not supported, there is likely a promotion for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/business\/answer\/9934993?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pointy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you can check your business\u2019s eligibility to add Products this way.\u00a0<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/whitespark.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/connect-to-pointy-swis.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, we have always recommended that service-based businesses take advantage of Products and especially its visual prominence by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7LXazIpvDG8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uploading their services as Products<\/a>. With this update, showcasing services as Products may no longer be an option as the emphasis shifts to actual products offered by retail businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s next?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local SEOs often say, \u201cWatch what Google <em>does<\/em>, not what it says\u201d which rings true here as existing Google Products are still visible on Google Search and Maps even while the notice in the Profile Manager tells the business owner they are unpublished.
